Electronic invoicing
As of January 1, 2026, invoicing rules will change in Belgium: electronic invoicing (or e-invoicing) will become legally mandatory for all transactions between businesses, including self-employed individuals. Paper invoices and PDFs will no longer be permitted, nor will the transmission of these types of documents by email or post. They must be replaced by invoices sent through the standardized Peppol network.
What you absolutely need to know right now:
• Peppol is free, but you'll need to use invoicing software capable of processing incoming and outgoing electronic invoices. We recommend managing them yourself to maintain control of your records.
• This requirement applies to all self-employed individuals, including those in a complementary activity.
• Avoid fines by preparing for the new regulations before January 1, 2026. Fines for invalid invoices can be as high as €5,000.
